In 1982, Leslie Hindman founded Leslie Hindman Auctioneers in Chicago, Illinois, and within a few years it grew to be the largest auction house in the Midwest, and one of largest in the country. As a result of the firm's outstanding reputation, it was acquired by Sotheby's in 1997. When the opportunity presented itself, Leslie reopened Leslie Hindman Auctioneers in 2003 and continued her growth trajectory.
Also part of the Hindman family of auction houses, Cowan's Auctions was opened in 1995 by Wes Cowan in Cincinnati, Ohio. Cowan's quickly earned a reputation for integrity, customer service and great results. In 2018, these two firms became the foundation for Hindman, a rapidly growing organization with the ambition to be the nation's most client-centric auction house.

Center Stage: The Laura Pels Collection | Act III:
The couture collection of Laura Pels features runway pieces from Karl Lagerfeld’s collections for Chanel, Pierre Cardin Haute Couture from the 1980-90s, and an important collection of Geoffrey Beene. Many of the pieces were custom-made to Ms. Pels’ specifications. The collection also features more than forty Chanel handbags. Much like the art and jewelry collections of Ms. Pels, her couture collection reflects her deep appreciation and affinity for French culture.

The Laura Pels Collection | Act I: Fine Art A dedicated philanthropist and supporter of nonprofit theater through her eponymous foundation, Laura Pels forged important relationships with playwrights, actors, and creative directors in the United States and abroad. She was also a close friend and confidante of artist Françoise Gilot, whose paintings and drawings feature prominently in this stunning River House collection alongside works by contemporaries Jean Cocteau, Joan Miró, Alexander Archipenko, and Sam Francis.

Property from the Aline Elwes McDonnell Trust Aline Elwes McDonnell’s lineage is traceable back as far as King George II of England and to Copped Hall in Essex, a site near the town of Epping that dates back to medieval times – originally home to the FitzAucher family who held the office of Foresters. The meaning of ‘Copped’ has its roots in the old English term for peak and denotes the vantage point of the site upon which the 18th century version of the house was built. No fewer than three grand country houses graced the site until the demise of the Wyatt aggrandized version (now thankfully undergoing restoration by a local trust) in a devastating fire of 1917. Her unassuming Connecticut home featured a glorious recreation of an 18th century English country house drawing room complete with a finely woven Brussel’s tapestry circa 1680, a rare form of commode with the signature hallmark marquetry inlay of Messrs. Mayhew & Ince, Regency period cockpen faux-bamboo armchairs, and Fahua vases from the Ming Dynasty, all bound together by an illustrious group of portraits on the walls led by the tantalizing and unfinished depiction of a young woman with a fashionable late 18th century coiffure.

A dedicated philanthropist and supporter of nonprofit theater through her eponymous foundation, Laura Pels forged important relationships with playwrights, actors, and creative directors in the United States and abroad. Ms. Pels’ stunning residence at River House, New York, was decorated with fine Chinese ceramics, English and American furniture, and silver ranging from the 18th century to the modernist designs of Elsa Peretti. Her sophisticated taste and wide ranging collecting interest is reflected throughout this auction.
Western Manuscripts and Miniatures
For its inaugural sale of Western Manuscripts and Miniatures, Freeman | Hindman is honored to work with the Senior Consultant, Dr. Sandra Hindman, who curated the selection and prepared the catalogue. Manuscripts and miniatures from four major collections are included: those of Robert “Bob?? McCarthy (London and Hong Kong), Kenneth W. Rendell (Massachusetts), Dr. Scott Schwartz (New York City), and an anonymous California collector. Highlights include a handsome group of Books of Hours, among which the large Hours of Anne Seurot in its original blind-stamped binding by a close follower of the Boucicaut Master, the Master of the Harvard Hannibal, stands out. The earliest group of leaves, including “Atlantic?? Bible fragments, comes from the McCarthy Collection, recently characterized as “arguably the largest and most important private collection of illuminated cuttings, miniatures, and leaves in the world.?? There are attractive illuminated Bible leaves from some of the most sought after and well-known thirteenth-century Bibles – the Chester Beatty Bible, the Mailhac-Faber Bible, and the St. Albans Bible. Miniatures include those from Books of Hours by certain of the best illuminators of fifteenth-century France, the Falstoff Master, the Master of Coetivy, Robert Boyvin, among others. There are some pleasant surprises: the first Calendar Leaf to resurface from the famed Llangattock Breviary (along with other leaves from this Renaissance masterpiece), a Hebrew page from the Cairo Genizah of Maimonides discussing marriage, a signed and dated Polish Choir Book, a document of an English knight featured in Shakespeare’s Richard II.Bidder Reviews for Freeman's | Hindman (1,549)

Between Santa Fe Art Auction, Hindman, Heritage, Bonham and Moran, I have built a large part of my collection. There are other fine auction houses, but for top of the line vintage Navajos, these people know their art.

In House Shipping for Jewelry
They were incredibly accomodating with my jewelry purchase. Other auction houses require you to make your own arrangements on shipping, even when it is for a small piece of high-end jewelry. Hindman's took care of the shipping for me, at a very reasonble cost. Made the transaction much more comfortable.
