History
Swann Galleries was founded in New York in 1941 by antiquarian book dealer Benjamin Swann as an auction house specializing in rare and antiquarian books. George Lowry acquired the business and became president in 1970 upon Mr. Swann`s retirement.
At that time, a staff of four organized and conducted book auctions for a customer-base composed mainly of dealers. As the auction world opened to the general public, separate departments were established for different fields of collecting: first photographs, then autographs, and in the late 1980s-early 90s, prints and drawings and vintage posters. Swann is now a world leader in the auction market for works of art on paper.
Nicholas Lowry joined Swann in 1995 as head of the Poster department. He was named Principal Auctioneer in 1998 and Vice-President in 2000. In January 2001, he assumed the title of President and took over day-to-day management of the company, which now has a staff of 30; George Lowry stepped up to the new title of Chairman.
For over 25 years, Swann has been located on East 25th Street, just one block east of Madison Square Park, adjacent to the historic Murray Hill, Gramercy Park, and Flatiron districts, and right across town from Chelsea. The premises doubled in size in 1999 with the addition of a second gallery and salesroom.

Fine Books Featuring Focus on Women
This spring’s Fine Books covers prodigious territory in the bibliographic world, with many important Darwin titles in the sale, including a first London edition of his pivotal contribution, "On the Origin of Species," as well as two copies of the inspiring research that spurred him to see life on earth through a new lens, his foundational "Narrative of the Surveying Voyages of the Adventure and the Beagle." A notable collection of nearly 100 sixteenth century English imprints will give lovers of early printing a special opportunity to add rarities from the dawn of insular printing to their shelves. More rare and early astronomical works from Dr. Owen Gingerich’s collection will make up a significant portion of the sale, for those whose interests include book collecting and stargazing. Bright spots in literature will also be on the block, spanning the decades. Bidders will have a chance at everything from a signed first edition of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s "Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" to a beautifully preserved first edition of Frank Herbert's "Dune" in an excellent original dust jacket. We are happy to announce a healthy selection of children’s books in the sale, anchored by a lovely collection of first edition Oz books, many in dust jackets. Finally, we are proud to continue our Focus on Women tradition with a variety of material by and about this half of the population. A fine copy of the first American edition of "Wuthering Heights" will be a highlight, along with suffragist material, fine art, ephemera, and other goodies.Fine Photographs
This April we are pleased to offer a selection of fine art, historical, and vernacular photographs spanning the full breadth of the medium. The sale features a curated section of imagery from NASA, a special look at the history of Civil Rights photography, and works from the Kayafas Collection — celebrating the wide influence of Palm Press.Bidder Reviews for Swann Auction Galleries (76)

Swann Auction Galleries are Consummate Professionals.
We have purchased Several Times from Swann. We had them remove the crappy frame, which saved us hundreds in shipping and used the savings to get a better frame. This is the kind of service, that is "Routine" with Swann. If everyone operated like Swann, our collection would be a hundred times larger. Swann is the best.
