History
Swann Galleries was founded in New York in 1941 by antiquarian book dealer Benjamin Swann as an auction house specializing in rare and antiquarian books. George Lowry acquired the business and became president in 1970 upon Mr. Swann`s retirement.
At that time, a staff of four organized and conducted book auctions for a customer-base composed mainly of dealers. As the auction world opened to the general public, separate departments were established for different fields of collecting: first photographs, then autographs, and in the late 1980s-early 90s, prints and drawings and vintage posters. Swann is now a world leader in the auction market for works of art on paper.
Nicholas Lowry joined Swann in 1995 as head of the Poster department. He was named Principal Auctioneer in 1998 and Vice-President in 2000. In January 2001, he assumed the title of President and took over day-to-day management of the company, which now has a staff of 30; George Lowry stepped up to the new title of Chairman.
For over 25 years, Swann has been located on East 25th Street, just one block east of Madison Square Park, adjacent to the historic Murray Hill, Gramercy Park, and Flatiron districts, and right across town from Chelsea. The premises doubled in size in 1999 with the addition of a second gallery and salesroom.

African American Art
The spring offering of African American Art will include a selection of the iconic artists you have come to expect from the house from a significant group of modern, post-war and contemporary stalwarts. Of note is Charles White’s 'Woman in Blue,' 1965-66, a scarce example of an oil-on-canvas by the artist. This large painting of a serene, shrouded woman was an important subject for the White throughout his career. Also featured is a painting by Hughie Lee-Smith, an evocative 1953 composition of urban decay that epitomizes the artist’s career-defining body of work from Detroit. Lee-Smith rose to national prominence in 1953 when he was awarded the Founders Prize by the Detroit Institute of Arts. Works on paper include Romare Bearden’s 'Jazz Men,' 1970, a vibrant collage that was the inspiration for his popular print, 'Alto Saxophone,' and a beautiful 1963 abstract watercolor by Beauford Delaney from his Paris period that comes from the family of its original French owner. Two iconic and scarce prints by Elizabeth Catlett and Charles White, both printed at Taller de Gráfica Popular, Mexico City, will feature. The auction also will offer an early proof of Catlatt’s linocut 'Sharecropper,' 1952, and a numbered impression of White’s lithograph, 'Awaiting His Return,' 1936. The sale will also feature a special selection of 26 artworks from the estate of J. Eugene Grigsby Jr.Graphic Design
Our spring Graphic Design auction will stand alone this year as we have accumulated so many great works in this burgeoning, sophisticated market. The auction is anchored by two outstanding works by the indomitable A.M. Cassandre. His rare and exceptional book poster advertising Paul Morand's Champions du Monde has appeared at auction fewer than half a dozen times in the last 30 years. Second is the previously unseen-on-the-market Café Chat Noir. This 1932 poster has near mythical status, as it has historically been known to exist only as an unpublished poster. The designers whose work is featured in the sale read like a Who's Who of twentieth century titans, including: Erik Nitsche, Bertold Löffler, Fortunato Depero, Ludwig Hohlwein, Herbert Matter, Marcello Nizzoli, Sepo, Gustav Klutsis, Herbert Leupin, John Massey, Leo Lionni, Giovani Pintori, Sven Brasch, Ivan Chermayeff, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy and many more. Works from around the globe are represented by designs from Russia, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Japan, The Americas, France, Great Britian, Sweden, Poland, and more.Bidder Reviews for Swann Auction Galleries (75)

Swann Auction Galleries are Consummate Professionals.
We have purchased Several Times from Swann. We had them remove the crappy frame, which saved us hundreds in shipping and used the savings to get a better frame. This is the kind of service, that is "Routine" with Swann. If everyone operated like Swann, our collection would be a hundred times larger. Swann is the best.
