Luxury Asset Auction: C.K.McClatchy Estate
Perhaps no other name is more prominent in Sacramento than McClatchy. Their imprint on the region began with the Argonaut James McClatchy (1824-1883), who heeded the famous words of his editor at the New York Tribune, Horace Greeley who said, ?Go west, young man.? And go west he did. His gold rush odyssey included a shipwreck in Baja, CA and a brief mining stint before returning to his trade as a journalist.
Five successive generations of McClatchy?s would build what is known today as the McClatchy Co. One of which was Charles K. McClatchy, better known as C. K., who ran the newspaper company from 1979-89.
His estate is largely undisturbed since his passing in 1989. His secluded, midtown home was furnished with art, furniture, silver, oriental rugs and a magnificent library containing a wonderful collection of western books collected by his aunt, Eleanor.
Gary Kurutz, who catalogued the collection, considers it one of the finest private collections of its kind.
The contents of the estate have been broken into a two-day auction with the highest value items being sold in a live internet auction and the remainder in an online only auction the following day on witherells.com
