Winter American History Auction

Cowan's is excited to present the semiannual American History Auction featuring lots from the panoply of history, including: a wonderful daguerreotype of a locomotive; the photographic archive of the Alexander Stephens (CSA VP) family; the famous daguerreotype of "Governor Blacksnake" or "Chainbreaker," arguably the most significant Seneca leader of the colonial era; and a beautiful orotone of Buffalo Bill. Among other American Indians are images of Quanah Parker and his mother; Red Cloud; Sioux chiefs with Julius Meyer, American Jewish Indian Trader; and later images by Julia Tuell.

Many archives document significant events and people in words, images and artifacts. Early aviation is represented by the Glenn Curtiss archive. There are archives of William Tatem Collings ("Buckskin Charley"); Indian photographer Carl Moon; writer Eugene Field; "Bleeding Kansas" victim David S. Hoyt; CSA General William Mahone; and Libby POW Capt. Henry Dudley, as well as many other Civil War heroes.

Our expeditionary history comes to life in the Ralph Cairns 1912 Mt. McKinley expedition, the Greely Arctic Expedition, and the North Alaska Expedition of Lt. George Stoney. Other photographic collections include a wonderful collection of images of Lincoln's funeral train and West Point albums of 1862, 1868 and 1879. A rare broadside advertises the California and Oregon State Line and a mammoth poster of McKinley would have been visible to a large campaign crowd. Two silk banners proclaim the achievement of the Oklahoma Federation of Colored Women. An archive of Dr. William Robertson documents early medicine in the West. Many other lots as well relate to the Civil War, Mexican American War, Indian Wars, and World Wars I and II.
