These signs are usually smaller in size and were actually attached to gas pumps advertising what type of gasoline they contained. Almost all pump plates are single sided since they were screwed on to the side of a gas pump and the back side was never seen. Flange sign - A flange sign is a sign that has a 90-degree angle on it so that it can be attached to a wall and can be displayed perpendicular to the wall so you can see both sides of the sign. Flange signs can be either tin or porcelain. Rolled edge - If a sign is described as having a rolled edge, that means that one or more edges have been folded or bent to a 90-degree angle over with a ? inch or more lip. When this is the case for an American sign, it usually means that it was part of a larger sign or display. Convex sign - A convex sign is arched up in the middle. Most of the time this is a foreign sign. ?The field? - is the center 2/3 of the sign The field is the center 2/3 of a sign, globe face, or can. (Generally, this is where the logo, words, and any other design elements are within the sign.) ?Outer field- is the outer 1/3 of sign, outside of the main design or wording most of the time. Gloss - is used to describe a porcelain enamel sign. When the gloss is in excellent condition, the sign actually looks like it is wet Shine - is usually used to describe a painted sign. The shine refers to the luster a sign has. Color - If something is described as having good color that means that the colors are bright, or the way that it looked when it was brand new. Tin or metal - is a factory painted or silk-screened sign Porcelain - is a sign that has enamel decoration baked or fired on it (enamel is a glass) Masonite- is usual a sign painted during WWII when metal was scarce, but some people used it after the war because of the costs. Cardboard Backed-us used on metal & celluloid sign for strengthening & as a easel back to stand up by itself. Celluloid-plastic material bonded to paper. Chips - If a sign has chips, this means that there is a loss of surface material. This can be on both enamel and painted signs. Sometimes, with painted signs it could mean that the paint is not adhering to the metal very well. Repop - Repop is a word used to describe a reproduction of a sign. Reproduction signs have become quite prevalent in today?s world. Some repop signs are sold and advertised as a reproduction of an original. They are not deceptive and are often marked with the year they were manufactured. Unfortunately, not all repops are easily distinguishable. Many reproduction signs are not marked, and some people make a practice of trying to deceive collectors into believing that they are originals. Always buy from a reputable seller or auction company. Buyer beware! Fantasy - A product described as a fantasy item, was never created as an original piece for advertising. It was created for the sole purpose decoration. Touched up sign - If a sign is described as being touched up, this means that someone has tried to color match chips in the paint or enamel to the surrounding area, but it has not been clear coated. Restored sign - If a sign is described as being restored, this means that it has had all of its imperfections touched up and has been clear coated. It looks like a new sign with good gloss or shine. Repainted - If an item is described as repainted, that means that it has not been done professionally. It was done with a brush or spray can. This refers to all types of petroliana except for signs and globes. Restored - If an item is described as restored, that means that it has not been restored professionally, but it has been done nicely. It may still have rust, pitting, sanding marks or paint runs. This refers to all types of petroliana except for signs and globes. Professionally restored - If an item is described as professionally restored, this means that it was done by a professional restorer or to their standards. You could call it to top show car quality. This refers to all types of petroliana except for signs and globes. Cans: Wrapped can - A wrapped can is an oil can that has been taken apart in the past and used for something other than a display. When a collector finds the can and wants to reassemble it they find that there is not enough metal to make it the original size. In this case, an inexpensive can is used as a base and the good can is then wrapped around the outside and then a new top and bottom are attached. Repop wrap for a can - Repop wraps are made of vinyl to look like popular oil cans. These wraps are placed around a can and most of them are done so well that when you first look at one, you cannot tell that it is just a wrap. However, after feeling the seam, you can actually feel the end of the label. Re-rolled can - A rerolled can is a can that has been taken apart but when it is found, all of the metal is accounted for. The can is then re-rolled to its original size and a new top and bottom are attached. Globes: Lens - A lens is a piece of glass usually domed. The paint is usually fired or baked on (some early 15? or 16.5? lenses were not). Lenses can be as small as 8 inches in diameter and up to 48 inches in diameter. The most common sizes of lenses are 13.5?, 15? and 16.5 inches in diameter. HP - HP stands for High Profile which is a type of globe body. This type of globe body is arched or domed on the top. This body is made from metal and can be found for 15- and 16.5-inch lenses. (The only metal bodies made for 13.5-inch lenses are newly made.) LP - LP stands for Low Profile which is also a type of metal globe body. This type of globe body has a flat top. These bodies will only fit 15- and 16.5-inch lenses. Glass body - A glass body is a type of globe body that is made completely of glass. It was only made for lenses that are 13.5 inches or less in diameter. The body can be narrow or wide, meaning the width of the globe. The lenses are usually attached to a glass body with screws, at the 3 o?clock and 9 o?clock positions. A special glass body called a ballcrank has holes at 12, 4, and 8 o?clock. These globes are rarely seen. Gill body - A Gill body is a glass body made for 13.5 inch or less lenses which are held in place by metal rings that clamp around the lens and body at the same time instead of being held in by screws. Hull body - A Hull body is a glass body made for 13.5? or less lenses that are held in place by metal bands OPE - OPE stands for one piece etched. This is a one-piece milk glass canteen style globe that has had the advertising chemically or mechanically etched onto the body and then usually painted. The amount of original paint still left on the piece makes it better. If it has been repainted it decreases in value slightly. OPB - OPB stands for one piece baked. This refers to a one-piece milk glass canteen style globe that has had the advertising painted directly on it and then it has been baked in a kiln so that the paint adheres to the body. Repainting these globes severely affects their value. OPC - OPC stands for one piece cast. This refers to a one-piece milk glass globe that has been cast into a certain shape or style. A good example of this is the Standard Oil Crown globe. Chimney Cap or top - A chimney cap globe has a vent on the top of it and has a metal top that looks like a chimney. This was used on very early one-piece globes because they thought that the fumes needed to be able to be vented away from the light bulb. Jeweled Body - A jeweled body is a metal globe body that has colored jewels that have been inset all of the way around the piece Capco - A Capco body is a plastic globe body that is made of two separate pieces that are screwed together. These bodies are made for 13.5-inch lenses only, however a smaller lens can be used if you modify the body. Capco bodies have been created for lenses since the 1930?s.
