Antique Arms & Armor Auction
Lewis & Grant is pleased to announce our May 12, 2022 Premier Antique and Collectible Arms Sale featuring the collections of William Rutter and Jim Gabel.
This auction brings across the block exceptional selections from the collections of William ?Bill? Rutter of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, and Jim Gabel of Cincinnati, Ohio. These collections have been carefully curated and are being offered in addition to over fifty additional lots of collectible arms. In total, over 300 years of arms & armor history have been brought together for one day of exciting bidding.
Gabel?s passion for fine early arms is reflected in the first portion of the sale (Lots 1-79). These arms include a plethora of 17th and 18th century European pistols and long arms. Collectors of German makers will be especially interested in a rare superposed-load flintlock sporting rifle (Lot 50), a pair of fine pistols mounted in detailed gilt brass (Lot 30), and several examples fashioned by the famous Kuchenreuter family (Lots 16-22, 35-36). Also included in this selection is a very rare ?concealed flintlock? rifle by Wenzel Morawek, formerly of the Keith Neal Collection (Lot 56).
The sale continues with selections from the collection of Bill Rutter, an avid researcher and historian of American military arms (Lots 80-313). Rutter?s collection includes some of the most desirable collectible American arms available today, including a rare experimental .30 caliber Springfield Trapdoor Rifle (Lot 207), an Experimental Springfield Model 1882 Experimental ?Triangular Rod Bayonet? Rifle (Lot 192), and a Colt Model 1839 Patterson Carbine (Lot 291). Also offered are a rare Winchester 1895 Winchester-Lee Rifle from the USS Maine (Lot 216) and a scarce US Model 1898 Parkhurst-Zelenski Krag Rifle (Lot 224).
This auction will also make available for bidding several arms belonging to several American Western heroes, some of which are being brought before the public for the first time.
