May marks an important milestone for "Fine Black & White Photographica_XXVIII" as we mount the stupendous never before seen 19th century 'Cavalcade Of Chieftains'. These exceptional leaders of Native American tribes span the deserts, the Plains, valleys and mountains of 'America The Beautiful'. Indeed many have never even heard of the array tribal names here before.. such as the Kwakiutl, Wasco, Jicarilla, Cayuse and Umatilla nations along with the more familiar Apache, Navajo, Iroquois, Sioux and Osage. An additional representation is that of the Nez Perce Indians-except via a rare recent discovery of a war bonnet portrait of Chief Joseph that has not been seen or known of across the world. Equally remarkable and mostly unknown are the photographers responsible for Photographica_XXVIII such as Benjamin A. Gifford, De Lancey Gill, Lee Moorhouse, Burnette H. Love, Frank A. Rinehart along with more famed portrait artists in our prior ranks including Gertrude Kasebier, Edward Curtis and Herman Heyn. Yet the stature of this auction's photographs are such that some are derived from publishers & studios like publisher Edward H. Mitchell, Campbell, Metzger & Jacobson, the Bain News Service and Detroit Publishing Company along with Washington D.C.'s C.M. Bell Studio's. When speaking of portraits, specific non-Native treasures in this auction are Baron Adolf De Meyer's photograph of early 20th century society maven "Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney in Tiara with Peacock Feather" that was published in Vogue, Jan. 15, 1917.. along with Gertrude Kasebier's portrait of sculptor Auguste Rodin working in France. All comers are welcome for "Fine Black & White Photographica_XXVIII"
