"Featuring The Civil War_Part 2, by photographers Matthew Brady and Alexander Gardner". The American Civil War (April 12, 1861 - May 26, 1865) was between the Union (states that are loyal to the federal union, or "the North") and the Confederacy (states that voted to secede, or "the South"). The central cause of the war was slavery, and it's expansion into territories acquired as a result of the Louisiana Purchase and the Mexican-American War. On the eve of the Civil War in 1860, four million of 32 million Americans (13%) were slaves, almost all in the South. The Civil War is also credited with what has been called 'The Birth Of Photojournalism', for prior to that there had never been practitioner's or outlets that distributed news specifically oriented to a more 'documentary format'. And as featured in one of our previous 2022 auctions, the man unanimously known as the American photographer of his time and the master of crafting photographic documentation of this war was in fact Matthew Brady. However in our "Sequel" to said prior sale, we are coupling the second most acknowledged master of this Civil War craft, Alexander Gardner. Gardner lived in Europe and visited The Great Exhibition in 1851 in Hyde Park, London where he saw the photography of American Matthew Brady. In 1856, he immigrated to the United States, initiated contact with Brady and came to work for him that year, continuing until 1862. In this auction one can immediately distinguish between the two for Gardner's works are all sepia toned prints that are signed and dated on recto below the image. All images herein are immaculately restored as dye based photolithograph prints with engaging titles such as 'BURYING CONFEDERATE DEAD', 'PRESIDENT LINCOLN ON BATTLEFIELD', 'MORTAR DICTATOR', 'DESTROYED HORSES AND WAGONS IN MAHERSBURG' etc.
