Culled from a life collection of 10,000 antique maps, this sale features an excellent example of a rare first printing of Col. Dodge’s 1835 Expedition to the West. Another elusive early map of America being offered is a scarce second issue of Robert De Vaugondy’s wonderful 1771 Amerique ou Indes Occidentales, his fine depiction of the Americas. WorldCat shows only four of these worldwide. Another extraordinary item in this sale is a scarce variant of Jacques Bellin’s 1757 map of the Mississippi River Valley and environs, with the name "Floride" in the title (the more common version omits “Florideâ€). This Trans-Mississippi map shows the American West as it existed during America’s early burgeoning. This is an excellent example with no faults. The sale contains a good selection of maps from Mathew Carey’s very scarce 1816 General Atlas, including the extremely scarce Mississippi Territory formerly Louisiana and Missouri Territory. Both maps are rarely available. Anthony Finley’s exquisitely scarce 1833 atlas contributes several extremely nice examples of early American state maps that are not often seen. An unusual entry in this sale are eight very scarce maps from John Cooke’s 1802 Universal Atlas in a seldom seen circular format. These maps rarely appear on the market. Several huge and scarce maps from Cram’s final 1910 Standard American Railway System Atlas are found in this auction. Many pro map experts don’t know this atlas exists, believing his 1905 edition as his last. It is an exotically scarce atlas with maps not found in most collections. Along with early maps from Morden, Ruscelli, Mercator, Mallet and a selection of maps from several American mapmakers, a nice addition to this auction are several scarce hand-colored plates from the first major sport color plate book produced in America, the first edition of Thomas Doughty’s Cabinet of Natural History and American Rural Sports, published in 1830.
