Modern & Post-War Art

Swann's Modern and Post-War Art department, led by Harold Porcher, focuses on Modernist paintings, drawings and sculpture up to and including works from 1946 through the contemporary period. Two high-end sales will be added to Swann's annual roster, to include works by the likes of early modernists, such as Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse, through later European modernist movement of the COBRA group including Karel Appel and the unique French response to Action Painting by Zao Wou Ki, Pierre Soulages, and many others. Americans working in the Post-War era to be featured will include Hard Edge abstraction by the likes of Ilya Bolotowsky, and first and second generation Abstract Expressionist painters including works by Jimmy Ernst, and Esteban Vicente. The addition of a department dedicated to Modern and Post-War paintings, drawings and sculpture marks a moment of growth for Swann and builds on the momentum of our groundbreaking African American Art offerings of the last decade, as well as our long track record as the go-to house for works of art on paper. Twice annual sales dedicated to Modernist and Post-war paintings and sculpture will allow Swann to fully service the needs of our consignors and collectors, offering a broader range of unique works by diverse artists. We are taking consignments on a rolling basis for these sales. Contact Harold Porcher with consignment inquiries. Harold Porcher joined Swann in early 2020 after serving as the director of Modern and Post-War art at another New York auction house. Having worked in the fine art world since 1989, Porcher has written extensively on modernism and has given talks on art and the art market. He was a founding board member of the Slobodkina Foundation, whose mission is the promotion of the artistic creations of modernist artist and children's book author Esphyr Slobodkina.
