NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle will hold an auction of American Paintings & Prints on Wednesday, November 8, 2023 at 11am. Showcased will be 19th and 20th century paintings, including fine examples of nautical paintings, portraiture; Hudson River, Western and regional landscapes; and still lifes, in addition to Audubon, Currier & Ives and topographical prints. The Collection of the Direct Descendants of Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney A special feature of the sale is property from the Collection of the Direct Descendants of Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney. Among the 21 lots from the Collection are four sculptures by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney and Western paintings, drawings and prints. Sculptor, art patron and collector Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney (1875-1942) founded the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York in 1931. Her most famous sculpture, Buffalo Bill - The Scout, depicting the legendary rough rider on horseback, was created in 1924 for the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, Wyoming. Her son, Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney, funded the establishment of the Whitney Museum of Western Art in her honor at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in 1959.
