Marvin Lipofsky Archive Auction Habatat MW

We here at Habatat are honored to offer a collection of unique and impressive sculptures directly from the Marvin Lipofsky Estate archives. This is an incredibly unique opportunity to acquire work by the legendary artist who has work in 125 museum collections throughout the world. Each work has a story of when, where, and with who it was created. Join us for a talk about the artist and the work in this offering via Habatat-Zoom on Saturday, November 4th at 1:00 p.m. We will be joined by Jeanette Bakhour, the Marvin Lipofsky Studio Manager, who will be discussing the collection to be auctioned that day. Marvin Lipofsky was a pioneering American glass artist who had a major impact on Studio Glass starting in the 1960s. As one of the early glass artists to work outside of a factory setting and use glass as an artistic medium for individual expression, Lipofsky helped elevate glass from craft to fine art status. Along with artists like Harvey Littleton and Dale Chihuly, Lipofsky experimented with new glassblowing techniques and helped establish university-based glass programs that trained the next generation of glass artists. Lipofsky introduced glass as an art form in 1964 at the University of California, Berkeley, Department of Design, where he taught until 1972. In 1967, he founded and headed the glass department at the California College of Arts and Crafts and taught as a full professor until 1987. Throughout his long and influential career until his death in 2018, Lipofsky's artistic vision and mastery of glass continually inspired other artists. His leadership as a teacher at the University of California, Berkeley, and the California College of the Arts also shaped many students. As both a practitioner and advocate of the medium, Marvin Lipofsky was instrumental in elevating glass in the art world and paving the way for continuing innovations in the field
