Fine Art, Midcentury, Asian & Antique Auction

October's auction provides a wonderful collection of fine art, midcentury modern, decorative arts, period American & European antiques, and Asian antiques & decorative arts. Fine art will open the sale with a grouping of African-American paintings by A.C. Hollingsworth, Bob Thompson, Samuel Middleton and Walter Sanford as well as a marvelous white marble relief by Charles Calverly of a young African-American girl. Early to mid 20th century art feature 6 works by Jonah Kinigsten, 2 works by local artist Alton Tobey, paintings by Latin artists Carlos Merida and Leonardo Neiman, 2 etchings by Reginald Marsh, an etching by Paul Cadmus and a George Bellows Lithograph. A woodblock after Albrecht Durer is also included as well as paintings by French artists Carmen D'Avino, Jean-Louis Forain, and Ludovic Pissarro to name a few. Midecentury modern lots are highlighted by Arne Vodder for Sibast t-back chairs, a Hans Wegner bench, a Paul Evans dining set, Eames chairs, a Paul Evans sculpted table, and Laverne cocktail table, but include many other pieces. A beautiful 18th century gilt wood mirror, a French ormolu desk, a 19th century Empire table and sideboard, a 17th century Continental coffer, a 19th C. marquetry music cabinet and a 18th c. 3 drawer commode are among the period antiques to be offered on the 21st. Asian items are a strong sell at Clarke and include porcelain, furniture - an altar table, chairs, an opium bed, benches, Chinese carved and gilded panels, snuff bottles, Asian silver, bronze Buddhas, and a Persian astrolabe. Gold, diamond, and precious stone jewelry, sterling silver, a Tiffany Studio table lamp, Bronzes after Remington, Mene, and Rancoulet, and a Daum Nancy vase are just a few of the decorative items in this sale. Rounding off the auction are miscellaneous treasures such as a large collection of commemorative British royal cups including Queen Elizabeth, many pre-Columbian pieces, a flare gun and a shot revolver.
