Freeman’s | Hindman’s Philadelphia Books and Manuscripts department is proud to start off 2025 with its inaugural sale during New York’s Americana Week. Printed and Manuscript Americana will be exhibited at our 67th Street gallery from January 18-24, with the sale taking place in Philadelphia on January 29. Top lots include a first edition of The Federalist, ($60,000-$90,000), a hand-colored first edition of William Birch’s The City of Philadelphia, ($40,000-$60,000), Puritan John Eliot’s early description of Massachusetts, New Englands First Fruits ($40,000-$60,000), and an autograph letter signed by President Thomas Jefferson, discussing the first federally constructed highway ($25,000-$35,000) The tightly curated sale will also feature a fine selection of works by American naturalist John James Audubon, including his Wild Turkey ($30,000-$50,000), Fish Hawk ($20,000-$30,000), Trumpeter Swann ($20,000-$30,000), as well as the first octavo edition of Birds of America ($25,000-$35,000), the first octavo edition of Quadrupeds of North America ($4,000-$6,000), and more. Other highlights include a very rare Providence-printed broadside of George Washington’s first inaugural address, one of only two known copies ($15,000-$25,000); contemporary lecture notes by an American student of famed English jurist William Blackstone ($15,000-$25,000); a handsome copy of one of Benjamin Franklin’s Poor Richard almanacs, ($10,000-$15,000), the original diary of photographer Joseph K. Dixon, leader of the Second Wanamaker Exhibition to the American West ($6,000-$9,000), plus documents signed by Abraham Lincoln, John Hancock, George Clinton, and more.
