Private Collectors Antiquarian Maps

The liquidation of an 80-year-old map dealer?s personal collection continues with significantly lowered reserves on many key items. Heavy in American maps from the first half of the 19th century (over 60% of the American maps in this sale are 1816 to 1860). This auction also features nearly three dozen collectible maps from the 17th and 18th centuries. Of particular interest are selections from two of the most important early American atlases, the rare 1816 Mathew Carey General Atlas and Carey and Lea?s 1823 edition of their American Atlas with maps that are largely identical to the 1822 first edition. Several maps from Volume 1 of the first edition of J. H. Colton?s Atlas of the World will be found, as well as several A. J. Johnson atlas maps, primarily from the 1865 and 1867 editions of his Steel Plate Family Atlas. Rounding out the auction are a dozen scarce hand-colored plates from the 1830 first edition of J. & T. Doughty?s Cabinet of Natural History and American Rural Sports, the first major sport print color book produced in America. These engravings are the original plates by Thomas Doughty, famous painter and founder of the Hudson River School. Collectible maps have been resilient as an investment?better than many other categories of antiques in the past twenty years.
