Diane Cooper Gradating From Eastern Michigan University with B.A. Degree in fine Arts, Diane has continued to study with artist around the world. Most influential in her work was 5 years in Japan, Studying Japanese calligraphy and brushwork technique. Her Abstract paintings, often based on subjects from nature, concentrate on the use of the rhythmic line and marks made with bold color. Forming a strong and powerful impact, they expose the artist's joy creating. From the late 60's she has exhibited at galleries and art centers around the world including America, Japan and England. Her work was exhibited in the 1986 R.A. summer Exhibition and can also be seen at The New Academy Gallery, Windmill Street and at the Chiltern Centre, Chiltern Street, London. Living in Asia, a culture much older then our own, developed within Diane a love for the aged and worn surface. The Japanese aesthetic especially has been a major influence in her work. Layers and Layers of canvas and layers of color are worked and reworked representing frustration, success, depression, elation and all other emotions connected with the creative process. Diane's works on two series Shibui and Tobari "Shibui" means handsome, good-looking in a subtle, refined manner. Six inch squares, each different, comprised of wood, metal, fabric, plastic, leather, and found materials fill a defined space in order rows. "Tobari" means Tapestry. Twelve inch squares covered in an infinite variety of materials range in presentation from contemplative and minimal to chaotic and aggressive, creating a pulsating wall of diversity. Other works : "My subject is paint." Using scenes or objects that interest Diane as catalyst, the real inspiration begins with the application of paint. Freedom of line has evolved from calligraphy and sumo studied while living in Japan a major influence in Diane's work. Creating an immediate image while conveying the intense energy felt in Dian's objective.
