NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle will hold an auction of Latin American Art on Tuesday, April 8, 2025 at 11am. The sale will present paintings, drawings and sculpture by prominent artists of the 20th and 21st centuries, representing Central and South America, as well as the Caribbean Islands.
Highlighting the auction is an important 1945 portrait by Mexican artist Rufino Tamayo, depicting his wife, Olga. Featured in Tamayo’s 1979 retrospective at the Guggenheim, this magnificent work also traveled to exhibitions in Paris, Stockholm, and London.
The Nicaraguan master of Neofiguration, Armando Morales is represented by a large-scale 1984 work on canvas that showcases the artist's dreamlike and mysterious compositions. Cuban art features a selection of works showcasing the Caribbean Surrealism of Williams Carmona. Among the sale’s most contemporary pieces is a 1986 work on canvas by the prominent Chicano Art painter Roberto Gil de Montes.
A key figure in Modernist Cuban painting, Agustín Fernández moved to New York in the late 1940s to study under George Grosz and Yasuo Kuniyoshi. His stunning 1957 canvas, created just before his decade-long stay in Paris, presents a colorful composition marrying dreamlike Surrealism with biomorphic forms.
Mexican sculptor Armando Amaya, a student of Francisco Zúñiga, created similarly graceful figurative sculptures. Amaya is represented in the sale with three bronze sculptures, as well as a figure carved from Carerra marble.
The auction also features works by Mario Carreño, Gunther Gerzso, Mathias Goeritz, Maximino Javier, Antonio Maluf, José María Mijares and Miguel Padura, among many others.
