Western Manuscripts and Miniatures

On July 8, Freeman's | Hindman presents its second sale of Western Manuscripts, again alongside Senior Consultant, Dr. Sandra Hindman, who curated the selection and prepared the catalogue. Highlights among the bound volumes include several attractively estimated Books of Hours associated with important artists such as Attavante di Attavante, Herman Scheere, Taddeo Crivelli, Leonardo Bellini, and the Master of the Vitae Imperatorum—the latter once owned by Victorian polymath John Ruskin (author, artist, social critic, and collector). A surprise discovery is a long-lost illuminated historiated initial from the Beaupré Antiphonal, also previously in Ruskin’s collection. Among the leaves and cuttings are a leaf from the Ghistelles Hours, a group of finely painted Atlantic Bible fragments, and numerous Bible leaves—from the Chester Beatty Bible, the Mailhac-Faber Bible, the Josephinum Bible, the Bohun Bible, and the Hornby-Cockerell Bible, among others. Also included are a leaf from the Llangattock Breviary, leaves from the Bute-Soissons Hours, and numerous examples by or from the circle of leading French illuminators such as Jean de Haincelin, the Master of Philippa of Guelders, François Barbier, the Master of the Entries of Francis I, and the Master of the Echevinage de Rouen. A fascinating cutting from the circle of Simon Bening—survivor of the famous Jarmon flood—is also featured, along with a lovely Renaissance volume of Petrarch’s Canzoniere. Unusual 19th-century additions include an illuminated English copy of Chaucer’s Prioress’s Tale and a lavish neo-Gothic French marriage book, with borders and miniatures after Jean Bourdichon.
