Early 1800s Educational and Games

Welcome and thank you for joining Crowded House Auctions. We have the privilege of sharing a private lifetime collection of antiques, that offer a window into the life of children in the 1800's.This is the first of three sales to dispose of the collections ofMary Ellen Anthrop (1050 - 2024) of rural Tippecanoe County, Indiana. Mary possessed a life-long interest in the layers of history around her - her family, community, church, state and nation. She earned degrees in history and social studies education from Purdue University and for many years taught history at Lafayette's Central Catholic High School. Many of Mary’s students participated in National History Day, with some earning awards at the state and national gatherings. It was not unusual for her collections to show up in the classroom to help communicate that day’s lesson. In collecting, Mary sought both knowledge and fun. This sale features 19th century Staffordshire Alphabet and other children’s dishes, rewards of merit, older school books, holiday post cards, Mcloughlin Brothers books, school photos and boxed Victorian Games. It is evident that the owner of this private collection took great care and pride in these pieces, as many of them have been preserved in various ways. We are hopeful that these pieces will find new homes that are valued just as dearly as they were before. Future sales will have Christmas items, toys and games, periodicals, ephemera, American and Catholic history materials, Indiana post cards, Stereo Photos and more.
