Old Masters and 19th Century Art

This November, Freeman’s will present a wide selection of European paintings from the 15th to 19th centuries. Leading the sale is a distinguished California collection, highlighted by Giovanni Paolo Panini and Studio’s intricate View of the Pantheon, Rome, alongside Charles François Lacroix’s dramatic Eruption of Vesuvius and elegant 19th-century works by Guillaume Guillon-Lethière and Eugen von Blaas.

Landscapes will feature prominently, from dazzling Venetian views by followers of Canaletto to later masters Franz Richard Unterberger and Antonietta Brandeis. Portraiture and still life will also shine, including Konstantin Egorovich Makovsky’s enigmatic Eastern Beauty and two large Dutch works deaccessioned from the Philadelphia Museum of Art in support of future acquisitions. Other standouts include Jan Brueghel the Younger’s finely detailed landscape and Montague Dawson’s spectacular marine Cutty Sark.
