Modern & Post-War Art

Before Will Barnet became a household name in the art world, recognized for his Neo-Classical compositions rendering intimate domestic scenes, he was an active member of the Artists Union, an organization that was instrumental in bringing awareness and funding to unemployed artists through art programs as part of FDR's New Deal. Lollipops and Balloons is an abstracted still-life painting by Barnett, created around the time he was employed under the WPA/FAP. In this early painting, his mastery of compositional balance is clearly established. In this era of constant connection through smartphones and texting, the eloquence of correspondence seems to have ebbed. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Mail Art and later Fluxus became facets of the art scene, bringing new dimensions to the parcel post. Key figures in this genre offered here are Ray Johnson, Joe Brainard, George Brecht, and Nam June Paik.
