The Fortress: 500 Years of Furniture and Decorative Arts
For over two decades, The Fortress has served as both a home and haven to Antonie Reinhard and the late Maurice Margules. Located in Troy, New York, this nationally recognized historic property, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013, holds significance both architecturally and for the exceptional collection it houses. Within its walls, Reinhard and Margules created a private residence that doubled as a lived-in showcase, offering a compelling case for mixing centuries-old craftsmanship and modern sensibilities. Their expansive collection of early European furniture and decorative arts was dutifully preserved and intentionally lived with.
Known figures in New York?s downtown antiques trade, at Metro Antiques and later Turbulence; the pair built a reputation for sourcing pieces of exceptional character, form, and historical resonance. The Fortress: 500 Years of Furniture and Decorative Arts brings together more than 150 lots spanning five centuries, each bearing the mark of their studied eye and passion for material culture. From the Italian Renaissance through the Baroque and William and Mary periods, the sale offers objects chosen both for their rarity and ability to speak across time.
Highlights include a North Italian Marble Inlaid Ebonized Table Cabinet, a German Inlaid Walnut Commode, a Pair of Spanish Red Lacquer and Gilt Chinoiserie Decorated Chairs, a South German Alpine Gothic Chest from the 15th Century, and a Large Breche d?Alep Center Table.
