Old Master Through Modern Prints
An array spanning styles and periods, from the fifteenth century through the mid-twentieth century comprises our robust spring print sale this year.
Standout early offerings include a remarkable example of "Virgin and Child with the Monkey" by Albrecht Dürer, and a fine impression of "The Triumph of Mordecai" by Rembrandt van Rijn, amongst other works by Hendrick Goltzius and Giovanni B. Piranesi.
The rare complete "Hommage à Goya" portfolio by Odilon Redon is a highlight of the nineteenth century section, along with leading figures of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, such as the zincograph "Les Laveuses" by Paul Gauguin.
Egon Schiele’s "Kümmernis" is a highlight of the Modern European presentation, which also includes the likes of Salvador Dalí, Joan Miró, and Pablo Picasso. Two early etching and drypoints by Marc Chagall, "An der Staffelei" and "Die Liebenden," from his early series "Mein Leiben," are also included.
Important American prints from the first half of the twentieth century, include Stow Wengenroth’s striking lithograph "Manhattan Gateway," an atmospheric portrayal of the Brooklyn Bridge walkway. It stands alongside other exemplars of Modern American printmaking, with works by Grant Wood, Samuel L. Margolies, Martin Lewis, and others.
