Vintage Photogravures and Lithographs Day 1

Most of the items in this 2 day auction are sheet-fed photogravures printed during the 20th century. Unlike halftone printing which represented shades of gray by varying the size and spacing of black dots, The much more expensive gravure process used a honeycomb pattern of grays and blacks to achieve tonality and was the favorite process of the photographers themselves. Halftones became prevalent in the beginning of the 20th century, and photogravures from that period are becoming rarer and much harder to find. Day 1 - will focus on Photogravures from the first half of the century, including the major pioneers of the art. Artists such as; Man Ray, Brassai, Steichen, Steiglitz, Edward Weston, Ansel Adams. Included also are a few hand pulled gravures which are considered by many to be on par with the original chemically processed photographs. There are also a number of Lithographs from the entire century. Day 2 will focus on the next wave of photographers. Artists such as Robert Frank, Irving Penn, Cartier-Bresson, Herb Ritts, Sam Haskins.........as well as additional works on paper and ephemera
