Royal Fine Asian Art & Antiques and Dr. Robert I-San Lin Collection
Dr. Lin came to America in 1963?earned a PhD degree from University of California Los Angeles in 1968?and received postdoctoral and business training at California Institute of Technology?Massachusetts Institute of Technology?and Harvard University. He served as Life Science Manager at GTE Corporation, as Chief Scientist at PepsiCo, and as vice president, senior vice president, or executive vice president at several leading pharmaceutical and nutrition companies. For many generations, Dr. Robert I-San Lin?s ancestors were major antique collectors/dealers. His grandfather Lin Shian was an accomplished scholar (Gu Len) of late Qing Dynasty (late 19th ? early 20th century) and Emperor Guangxu appointed him head of Tai Shun County of Zhejiang Province. After the revolution and the establishment of Republic of China, he retired to focus on painting and collecting antiques. He is listed in several compendia of leading Chinese painters. Dr. Lin?s grandfather from mother-side Lin Shu Chen was a major antique collector-dealer of the same period, active in Beijing, Tianjin, Shangshai, Hanzhou, and Fuzhou. His collection included about ten thousand Chinese seals and prints of seals. He studied these seals together with Mr. Wu Chang Shuo, the most accomplished Chinese painter and seal-carving artist then. He helped Wu to establish the Shi Len Yin Se (Society of West Cold Seals, a U.N. cultural heritage in Hangzhou, China). Wu and another leading painter Huang Binhong wrote the Introductions to the compendium ?Collection of Seal Prints? that he compiled. The Lin Collection was relocated to Taipei around 1946; and part of them relocated to the U.S. Starting early 1960s. Dr. Lin Collection includes important and valuable porcelains, jade carvings, bronzes and imperial seals. Many of his treasures are two to four thousand years old and have words or marks on them.
