Minimalia: Italian Art, Second Avant-Garde

Wright is pleased to announce Minimalia: Italian Art from the Second Avant-Garde, an auction dedicated to art produced in Italy between the 1960s and early 1980s. This period saw the development of a number of art movements such as ZERO, Gruppo T, Gruppo N, Pittura Analitica and Arte Povera that paralleled American Minimalism. While the practices of these groups are in dialog with North American Minimal painting and sculpture, they represent a uniquely Italian vision that influenced the international avant-garde of the time on its own terms. Auction highlights include works by Enrico Castellani, Salvatore Scarpitta, Mario Merz, Alberto Biasi, Grazia Varisco and Giorgio Griffa among many others. This sale was inspired by a reflection on the 1999 exhibition Minimalia: an Italian Vision in 20th Century Art at MoMA PS1 curated by internationally reknowned Achille Bonito Oliva. The exhibition explored the centrality of Italian artists in the history of twentieth century abstraction. All works will be on view in our New York gallery beginning October 6th.
