Modern & Contemporary Prints & Multiples

On May 26, Bonhams sale of Modern & Contemporary Prints & Multiples will offer prints from renowned artists like Alice Neel and David Hockney, who are currently enjoying retrospectives in museums in New York. Highlighting the sale are seven prints by Alice Neel, whose works are on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art with People Come First, through August 1st. The auction features several portraits of the late artist's family including Ginny, 1976 (estimate: $1,500-2,500), a languid portrayal of Neel's daughter-in-law. At the Morgan Library, David Hockney's retrospective, Drawing from Life, closing May 30th, examines works on paper by the artist's small group of intimates including his muse and confidante, Celia Birtwell. The London designer is featured in two prints in the auction, Celia Seated on an Office Chair (Black State) 1974 (estimate: $5,000-7,000); and Celia Adjusting her Eyelash, 1979 (estimate: $4,000-6,000). Other highlights include five lithographs by Alexander Calder (estimates ranging from $3,000 to $5,000), whose works are on view at the Museum of Modern Art with Modern from the Start; Dear Clarice, from the Eight by Eight portfolio, 1983, by Niki de Saint Phalle (estimate: $2,000-3,000), whose works are on view at MoMA PS1 with Structures for Life; and Yayoi Kusama's pumpkin multiples (estimates ranging from $800 to $1,200) whose works are on view at The New York Botanical Garden with KUSAMA: Cosmic Nature. Deborah Ripley, Director, Prints & Multiples of Bonhams New York, said: "This sale has an exciting selection of works by artists who are currently on view at so many different museums, so bidders can own a work in their home as well. We are also excited to offer a range of significant works from Renoir etchings to Lichtenstein's most important print, Sweet Dreams Baby!"
