Bonhams Modern Decorative Art & Design sale in Los Angeles will offer a selection of lots from The Estate of Gene Ewing, fashion designer, model, and trendsetter. Among the highlights of the collection are two watercolors by leading 20th Abstract Expressionist Grace Hartigan, Rita and Untitled (Portrait of a Woman). Hartigan created both works during a 10-day vacation in 1986 to Ewing's Tarzana, California home - a modernist mansion designed by Harry Gesner. A close friend of Ewing as well as one of the most important American artists of a generation, Hartigan used her time in Tarzana and Los Angeles to re-invigorate her artistic practice. Both paintings are fresh to market, gifted directly from the artist to the designer. Each work is estimated at an attractive $5,000 - 7,000. According to Jason Stein, Bonhams Director of Modern Decorative Art & Design, "Innovative, effervescent, and effortlessly chic, Gene Ewing was a true original. Her visual and aesthetic style were very much informed by her successful career as a fashion designer. She was also known for her relationships with makers across New York and Los Angeles and the two Grace Hartigan works (gifts from the artist) are a testament to that. In addition to the watercolors, each of the superb pieces of furniture in our sale that comes to us from the Estate of Gene Ewing is incredible and just as relevant today as when they were acquired in the 80s."
