Henry Shippen Huidekoper (1839-1918) was a recent Harvard graduate when he enlisted on 30 August 1862 in Philadelphia as a captain, commissioned into Company K of the 150th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was quickly promoted to lieutenant colonel. At the Battle of Gettysburg, the 150th Pennsylvania held off Confederate forces for several hours. Huidekoper led the regiment and was twice injured, forcing the amputation of his arm. For his heroism, he was awarded the Medal of Honor.

Here, Huidekoper honors General John F. Reynolds who commanded the I Corps, of which the 150th Pennsylvania served in the 2nd Brigade, Third Division. Reynolds was a career US Army officer and a respected senior commander who was killed during the Battle of Gettysburg. The Equestrian Statue dedicated here was sculpted by Henry Kirke Bush-Brown and is the earliest dedicated to General Reynolds at Gettysburg.
