Description
Uniform and hat worn by Civil War veteran Raymond Kelly of the 214th Pennsylvania Infantry to reunions and events held by the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR). The GAR was a fraternal organization composed of veterans of the Union Army, Union Navy, Marines, and Revenue Cutter Service who served in the American Civil War. It was founded in 1866 and reached its peak membership in the late 19th century. The GAR provided support for veterans by advocating for their rights and benefits. It also played a significant role in shaping the memory and commemoration of the Civil War by hosting reunions and participating in parades, etc.
The lot includes:
1. Kelly's jacket with GAR buttons.
2. Kepi (fashioned after wartime examples) with insignia (missing a "4") and corps badge. The interior of the hat has a label with Kelly's name affixed.
3. Beautiful medal commemorating a reunion held by Civil War veterans in 1893. Retained in its original case.
