Partly engraved Naval Officer’s commission signed by Theodore Roosevelt, as President of the United States. Washington D.C. 10 February 1906. 1 page, on vellum.
A fine Naval commission issued to Warner B. Bayley, promoting him to the rank of Captain in the Navy. Warner B. Bayley (1845-1928) was a naval officer best remembered for his being a member of the board of inquiry that retrospectively examined the explosion of the battleship USS Maine, as well as for his service during in the Spanish-American War, a conflict that was incited by the Maine’s destruction. An engineer by speciality, Bayley began his career with the Navy at the end of the Civil War and served until April 1906.
