Pair Charles II style "Upholder's Hall" sconces, Possibly late 17th c., the shaped backplate repousse embossed and chased with two seated figures flanking a flaming torch, issuing two scrolling arms topped with candle cup and bobeche, engraved on the reverse "Upholders Hall" and "No. 11" and "No.12", metal untested, 15.75"h x 10"w x 4.5"d

Notes/Literature: One of a pair engraved "Upholders Hall" numbers 11 and 12, is illustrated R. Gentle and R. Field, Domestic Metalwork 1640 - 1820 (1994), p. 197, Plate 3. Interestingly, both examples have the same, but later, candle arms, drip-trays and candle sockets. Believed to have been installed at the original Upholders Hall in Wingfield House or Wingfield Place, between Lambeth Hill and St. Peters Hill in the parish of St. Peters, in the Ward of Baynard Castle. The building burned during the Great Fire of 1666
