Description
WELLESLEY, Arthur, First Duke of Wellington (1769-1852). Document Signed by Wellington and Countersigned by William Hamilton (1731-1803). November 16, 1820. Military promotion document on vellum, promoting Mark Dickens, Gent. to the rank of Ensign in the 35th Regiment of Foot. Signed by Wellington at the upper left corner, and Hamilton at the lower right corner. Wax seal is missing. Approximately 9 ½ x 13 ½”. Some wear, soiling, 3 vertical and 2 horizontal creases. Very good. This appears to be a field promotion, which was supposed to be signed by King George IV, but was signed in the field by Wellington and others. William Hamilton was a diplomat and politician who was married to Nelson’s mistress, Emma Hamilton.
