Description
An interesting 3-clasp Queens South Africa medal to a recipient in the Leinster Regiment who was sentenced to 6 months imprisonment for wounding his brother. Queens South Africa medal with clasps Cape Colony, Orange Free State and Transvaal, “3905 PTE. J BRYAN 1ST LEINSTER REGT”. Medal and clasps confirmed on the roll, medal issued 10th February 1904. Joseph Bryan, a 19-year-old Labourer from Mountmellick, Queens County Ireland attested for service in the Leinster Regiment on 13th July 1893. He spent time in Malta, Canada and on 18th April 1900 he arrived in South Africa leaving on 24th August 1902. His name appears on the medal roll for the Kings South Africa medal with a note (along with 2 comrades) ‘no medal, convicted under Section 18 Army Act’, later notes indicate that the medals were issued, with Bryans’ being issued in 1919. His record shows that on 9th January 1903 at Bradford Petty Sessions he was sentenced to 6 months imprisonment for wounding his brother. He was discharged on 11th July 1905 on the termination of his first period of limited engagement. He rejoined on 5th September 1914 serving with the West Yorkshire Regiment (#21845) and later the Yorkshire Regiment. He served in France from 5th November 1914 receiving a gunshot wound to his thumb. He later served in India and was demobilised on 1st June 1919.
