Large Indian Narrative Painting, Early 20th C. Painted on fabric, Pabuji Ki Phad is a religious scroll painting depicting folk deities. It is used for a musical rendition of the only surviving ancient traditional folk art form, Phad painting, which tells the epic of Pabuji, the Rathod Rajput chief. Bhopas of Pabusar are the bards and priests who traditionally narrate this art form. The Phad is also spelled as 'Par.' This art form is popular in the Indian state of Rajasthan. 'Pabuji Ki Phad' translates into two versions, namely, 'The Screen of Pabuji' or 'O, Reader of Pabuji!' Pabuji is also known as 'the Ascetic Deity of the Sand Desert.' Size: 4'6'' x 15'0'' (137 x 457 cm).
