British Pearlware Mochaware Jug, Circa 1830. Of "Empire bulge" form, slip-banded in grey and pumpkin and surrounded by brown and white slip-trailed horizontal stems on a grey ground above upright twigs on a pumpkin ground, the handle with leafy terminals.H: 7 in., W: 8.5 in., D: 6.125 in.Jonathan Rickard invented the descriptor "Empire bulge," a shape commonly found in decorative arts and fashion during the 1830s. On p. 63 in "Mocha and Related Dipped Wares, 1770-1939," Rickard notes that "The extra bulge below the pouring lip has no apparent function but instead is a stylistic development related to the Empire waistline of period fashion."
