Lot 26004
Victorian Lachrymatory w/Original Stopper Glass w/Gold Overlay. Also known as: tear bottle, tear catcher, tear vial, unguentaria, or unguentarium - Victorian or Civil War Era - Some wear on overlay & very tip of stopper appears to be chipped - 7" Long .........FYI: Tear bottles were very common in Roman times, found in many tombs and referred to in the Bible. They reappeared in Victorian times used to catch the tears shed during the mourning of lost loved ones. These had stoppers that would allow the tears to evaporate, signifying the end of mourning period. Used during the Civil War Era, these bottles would catch and save the tears of women awaiting the return of loved ones from war. The stoppers of this time were designed not to allow evaporation so that the bottle of tears could be shown to the men returning from battle demonstrating how much they were missed.....
