Lot 0060 Details

Description
6-ya Vsesoyuznaya Nizhegorodskaya Yarmarka [6th All-Union Nizhny Novgorod Fair], a poster by Sergei Chekhonin (1876-1938). Published by the Organizational Committee of the Nizhny Novgorod Fair, Moscow, 1927, 106.5 x 70.5 cm.

This curious poster combines unabashed agitation pathos with wry humor (one can't take quite seriously a composition that features a revolutionary camel), and does a good job in promoting the Nizhny Novgorod Fair, historically the largest Russian trade event east of Moscow, as “a place for the East to meet the West.” Inscriptions in several Arabic-based scripts, and even in Chinese, suggest that the poster was produced for distribution in Russian Central Asia and abroad.

A major Russian graphic artist, equally popular before and after the Revolution, Chekhonin left the Soviet Union in 1928.
