Hard boards, original blue cloth with color paste-on illustration on front board, gold lettering and decorations on spine [some surface wear, especially the spine ends: see photo]; 7.1/2" x 9.3/4"; "Frederick Griffen From Grandpa" is pencil written inside front cover, 180 pages on heavy paper, over 100 line illustrations + one color plate, a little wear and soiling, small abstract artwork with red crayon inside back cover [see photo], very good condition.

John Rea Neill (1877-1943) was a magazine and children's book illustrator primarily known for illustrating more than forty stories set in the Land of Oz, including L. Frank Baum's, Ruth Plumly Thompson's, and three of his own. His pen-and-ink drawings have become identified almost exclusively with the Oz series. He did a great deal of magazine and newspaper illustration work which is not as well known today.
