Item Details
Description
Born in 1831, Grenville M. Dodge began his storied career surveying for the Illinois Central Railroad, before moving on the the Union Pacific, where he suggested the path of the future Transcontinental Railroad to Abraham Lincoln. After the opening of the Civil War, Dodge was appointed Colonel of the 4th Iowa, serving effectively in Missouri, the Vicksburg Campaign, the Siege of Atlanta, and Sherman's March to the Sea, eventually receiving the rank of Major General of the XVI Corps in the Army of Tennessee, and several wounds from his valiant service. Dodge was then given command of the Department of Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, and Utah, where he ordered the infamous Powder River Expedition. After resigning from the Army in 1866 and a brief stint in Congress, Dodge returned to the Union Pacific as Chief Engineer of the Transcontinental project, having found an important passage through the Black Hills during his Western Service. Prominently photographed at Promontory Summit, Dodge is regarded as one of the most influential figures of the project. His railroad career continued overseeing numerous other projects, including advising the Trans-Siberian railroad. In addition to high accolades from Presidents and other leading figures, Fort Dodge and Dodge City, Kansas, are named in his honor. This lovely pair of Smith & Wesson No. 2 Army revolvers are attributed to Dodge and are housed in a hardwood presentation case inscribed on the lid escutcheon "UPRR / GMD" for Union Pacific Rail Road / Grenville M. Dodge. Manufactured circa 1861 to 1874 with full polished blue finish, tip-up 6" octagon barrels, 1-line address roll marks, German silver half moon front sights, 6-shot unfluted cylinders chambered in .32 rimfire, and 2-piece smooth varnished rosewood grips. Guns are housed in the aforementioned presentation case with a box containing 15 rounds of ammunition, 4-piece cleaning rod, and pewter oiler. A copy of Stephen Ambrose's "Nothing Like it in the World" featuring Dodge is also included. CONDITION: Very fine. Both revolvers retain the vast majority of their original polished blue finishes, some areas drifting to patina, especially on the straps and barrels. Generous case colors present on hammers. Grips are extremely fine retaining nearly all of their original varnish with only handling marks. Both bores are bright and display razor sharp rifling with a few minor cleaned oxidation spots. Mechanics are fine. (A) features matching serial numbers on butt and inside of the right grip, with "X2" assembly numbers found on the barrel lug and cylinder face. (B) likewise matching, assembly numbered "L7". Case is very fine, displaying extremely well.
