The painting depicts the Huguenot fugitives after The Edict of Fontainebleau ( 22 October 1685 ), an edict issued by Louis XIV of France, also known as the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes. The Edict of Fontainebleau (1685) declared Protestantism illegal in France which means persecution of Huguenots. Edouard Jean Conrad Hamman (1819-1888, Paris) was a Belgian painter. He had his formal debut at the Ghent Salon of 1838 with an unspecified "interior scene". His exposure to other artists there led to him being influenced by the style of Louis Gallait.
