1775 Cangiamila Sacred Embryology Obstetrics Childbirth Medicine Abortion
François-Emmanuel Cangiamila was an 18th-century Italian cleric who served most of his career in Palermo. His ecclesiastical career, however, was significantly different from most of his contemporaries. His fame rests solely on his book Sacred Embryology – a treatise on the roles and responsibilities of unborn babies and pregnant mothers within the church. Cangiamila describes the expectations of doctors and surgeons, as well as those of the priests and even midwives.
Cangiamila wrote what proved to be a unique pairing of obstetric medicine and theology with much attention given to confession and prayer during pregnancy, private hygiene of the expectant mother, and legal medicine as it related to pregnant women.
French author Joseph Dinouart published an abridged summary of Cangiamilas Embryologie Sacree. It features engravings of surgical tools and instruments.
