From the left three cows are approaching the banks of a mountain lake whose water reflects the gentle dawn. In the centre a large cow is turning towards the forest glade where a shepherd boy is sitting underneath lavish tree tops. Signed and dated "H:Voltz/ 1876" in the right corner. The paint on the right edge is rubbed in three places. In a gilt wooden profiled frame. The cardboard is covered with a wooden plate on the reverse. Dimensions 16.5 x 40.5 cm, frame 20.5 x 54 cm.J. Friedrich Voltz (1817 - 1886), one of the most significant German painters of animals and landscapes of his time, devoted himself primarily to the depiction of cattle, thereby creating the breed portrait of these animals for the first time. He was royal professor and today can be seen, among others, in the Neue Pinakothek in Munich and in the Berlin Nationalgalerie.Condition: II
