Item Details
Description
Paris, France: Four Architectural Landscapes by Henri Miloch (1898-1979) unsigned watercolour and gouache painting on artist's paper, unframed Average sheet 9.00 x 12.00 inches (one is smaller 8 x 10.25 inches) A charming group of 4 paintings by the highly regarded painter, Henri Miloch. These are unsigned but come from a portfolio of his work which we are currently holding. Strong colours and sharp building images predominate these images. One is smaller than the others and depicts a village scene with a figure in a horse-drawn cart, the others depict churches with appealing architecture, and the gate house of a grand residence with figures entering the archway (this painting is particularly good quality). We suspect these were painted in outlying semi-rural areas around the city. In the series of photographs you will see the final photograph has two coastal scenes: they are painted on the reverse side of one of the church paintings. This work forms part of a collection we currently hold by Miloch. The Paris scenes seem to have been completed in the immediate post-war years, around 1948 - many were dated. These are undated and unsigned. Henri Miloch was born in Trieste (Italy) in 1898 but studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and was a member of the Society of French Artists. His life and work was very much centred in Brittany, in north west France, much of his work portrays Breton maritime life in the various ports, and local town observations, especially in the Concarneau area where he worked and exhibited for much of his artistic career. From 1959 he also had a workshop in Tours (Val de Loire). condition report: In decent order for framing, no tears or creases (the church painting with the coastal scenes on the reverse has a V shaped slight indent in the top left corner of the sheet, extending 2 inches down from the top edge) - but all have rough cut edges. All four have some toning throughout. The smaller village scene sheet has pinholes to the corners.
