Item Details
Description
Large, inscribed flagstaff relic from Fort Sumter, framed with a January 1861 issue of "Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper" cover depicting the removal of the US flagstaff from Fort Moultrie on Christmas Eve, 1860, before the fort was evacuated by Major Robert Anderson.

The relic flagstaff bears an ink inscription that reads: “Piece of the flag mast of Fort Sumpter [sic], S.C. – Cut Saturday Nov. 18th by J. Frank Hazell from the original inside of the fort.”

Cursory research shows that J. Frank Hazell was a firefighter from Delaware who had visited Charleston, SC in 1871 as part of a goodwill delegation. It is possible that he collected the relic then.

This is the largest flagstaff relic of Fort Sumter we have ever seen offered.
