Description
SUE DIRKSEN (1941-2021). Abstract Expressionist Painting, Sun Valley #3, 1989, 8-1/2" x 11-3/4" sight size acrylic and watercolor on paper (framed size: 10-1/2" x 13-1/2") signed/dated/titled on the back. Provenance: Ota House, Marina Del Rey, California. To see the signature you have to remove the piece from the frame. We did so and have posted photos. As a comparison we found a piece in approximately the same size range for $750.00. See photograph 6 as comparison. The artist's work's that are larger are many thousands of dollars. Sue Dirksen was born in 1941 and grew up in the Bay Area. She earned her bachelor’s degree from UC Berkeley and went on to earn her MFA from UCLA. During the two decades she spent in the LA art scene, she became lifelong friends with artists Ed Moses, Tony Berlant, and Gwynn Murrill, among many others. During a stay in Japan, Sue studied under a sumi-e master who taught her to empty herself of the external world and focus on the perfection of the brushstroke, repeating it until she caught its essence. Both her life and work were deeply influenced by the natural world and Buddhist philosophy, and later in her life, she was ordained as a Buddhist nun. Sue’s artistic practice was about conveying the vibration of light through color. As she said: “When painting I allow intuition to guide me and use the brush as an extension of my arm — to bring forth luminosity and potently-hued energy.” Her works pulsate when experienced from different points of view, and the vibrancy they transmit is indicative of the passion that drove her life. Sue’s paintings and watercolors have been exhibited throughout the United States, Germany, and Japan, and are included in numerous public and private collections worldwide.
