This plate is from the scarce United States Army and Navy, their histories, etc. published 1899 by The Werner Co. Drawn by Paul Werner and H. A. Ogden. Extra wide margins, exceptional color and fine impression. Chromolithography is an exotic and uncommon printing process requiring a highly skilled graphics artist to draw each color by hand on a stone plate. The images from those plates are transferred to a special sheet of paper one plate at a time. Because this process can use as many as 20-30 separate plates, it was especially time-consuming which is why it has rarely been used in the past 100 years. Because the artist must re-interpret the original painting while creating the individual stone color plates, chromolithographs are considered original art.
