Description: Autograph letters, four of them signed. On various sizes of paper, each tipped into its own paper folder on which is neatly and elegantly written "Bishops of the United States of America" along location of the diocese, name of the Bishop, and other details. Folders measure 21x16.7 cm (8¼x6½").The letters were written by four of the bishops to Anne Mackenzie (1818 -1877), a British writer. Th fifth was written for the bishop by a third party due to that bishop's absence. Mackenzie taught at mission schools in South Africa before joining the Zambezi Mission of the Universities' Mission to Central Africa, which was led by her brother, Charles, a Church of England Bishop of Central Africa. After his death in Africa, she returned to England, where she edited the monthly missionary magazine. The Bishops include:
John Henry Hopkins (1792-1868), the first bishop of Episcopal Diocese of Vermont and the eighth Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church in the U.S. He was also an artist (in both watercolor and oils), a lawyer, an ironmonger, a musician and composer, a theologian, and an architect
Arthur Cleveland Coxe (1818-1896) the second Episcopal bishop of Western New York. He used Cleveland as his given name and is often referred to as A. Cleveland Coxe.
Henry Washington Lee (1815-1874) bishop pf the Protestant Episcopal Church in the U.S. He served as the first Bishop of Iowa from 1854 to 1874. He also served as Provisional Bishop of Nebraska, 1857-1859, and Provisional Bishop of Kansas, 1860-1864. This letter is unsigned, and apparently written by a third party as "The Bishop of Iowa has been absent."
Henry Champlin Lay (1823-1885) was a bishop of the Episcopal Church. In 1859, Lay was elected missionary bishop of the Southwest, with jurisdiction over "Arkansas, the Indian territory, Arizona and New Mexico", and consecrated by on October 23, 1859. He supported Confederacy and was active during the Civil War. He writes to Mackenzie about his support for missionary activities and admiration for ths sympathetic nature of women.
Thomas March Clark (1812-1903) was an American Episcopal prelate who served as Bishop of Rhode Island between 1854 and1903 and Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church between 1899 and 1903.
