Item Details
Description
Wooden drum canteen with iron hardware. "C.S.A." painted in white ink/paint to side. Period ink inscribed label affixed to side reading in full: "Confederate Canteen Captured from a Confederate soldier in the battle of Ft. Donaldson [sic] Tenn. Feb 3rd [illeg.] 1862 By J. Carnes"

An excellent example of a Confederate wooden drum canteen with period provenance. The label places the capture prior to the Battle of Fort Donelson, though the author may have confused the battle's exact date. The soldier has signed his name "J. Carnes," which may be John P. Carnes of Company F of the 31st Illinois Infantry. Carnes enlisted on 22 August 1862 and was promoted to 2nd lieutenant by the Battle of Fort Donelson. The 31st Illinois was commanded by Colonel John A. Logan and part of the 1st Brigade, 1st Division. Carnes saw promotion twice more, reaching captain on 8 April 1865.

A fine trophy-of-war.
